I like a good ghost story, where it's all suggestion and not detailed descriptions with gore. There's a definite thread of threat running through James' stories which lead directly to the final moments of the Japanese version of the film, The Ring. Why do we find forms that are almost like our own but move oddly, crawling etc so horrific? Especially those where we can't see the face? The complete collection of ghost stories by English writer M.R. James, most of which were originally published in the early 1900s. I think this is a book to be placed on one's nightstand and enjoyed one or two stories at a time when in the mood. These are not graphic like modern era horror but leave a great deal to the imagination. I enjoyed the pace of these stories and the occasional touches of subtle humor.
