Sue Barnett is sixty, married with a grown up family and recently retired. She has an ambition to travel and because her husband won't accompany her she goes alone. On a trip to the Canadian Rockies Sue briefly meets retired cattle farmer - Sam Carter - twenty years her senior.
After agreeing to a pen pal relationship with Sam, Sue returns to her home and family to think about the next trip, but the events that follow have a profound effect not only on Sue, but also on her husband, her marriage and her family. She finds solace in her friendships as she struggles to keep a grip on her sanity and welfare and find a way to move on. She turns to more travel to look for a way out but will she find the answers she is looking for and regain the happiness she always thought she had?
