This is obviously the extra leftover stuff at the end of the run......but it’s still mostly pretty good. We see a Maria origin, some silly 1% stuff, and of course plenty of fun A&A nonsense. Enjoyable, funny and not boring... but also pretty inconsequential. In some ways, it feels like it’s setting up future storytelling in some vague way. I guess I’ll see.
I really thought I would dread this volume, because it is a random collection and a director's cut of issue zero I am not thrilled with.In the end, I did consider a 5 with it being Archer & Armstrong. And I am really pleased we get a chance to collect the random bits. I just wish it never ended.Bring back Archer & Armstrong with Van Lente at the helm!
Mary-Maria (24). A focus on Mary-Maria and her backstory ... and it's entirely boring. And not funny either. What a let-down going into the series finale! (But that's what happens when you give the penultimate issue over to a fill-in author, I guess.) [4/10]Anniversary (25). Van Lente offers some nice closure to his story, going to the heart of the characters as always, while a bunch of other authors write some OK tales [7/10].(I haven't read the 1% Special that finishes out this volume.)
A collection of meh.World: The art is overall pretty meh and not important. The world building is small and contain as the issues are all one shots, there is a little bit on the one percent which is good cause this series needs some better world building.Story: The single issues are okay actually. They are better than the couple of issue arcs as they are paced and written better. The single issues are focused and overall solid. However the book is not as funny as it thinks it is.Characters: Arch...
It seems clear that Van Lente had more stories to tell: at least one more arc. But this is just kind of sidestory stuff. And it feels like we've seen it before?
A mixed bag. This last volume is kind of a sendoff to the series, featuring diverse talent and some kinda, maybe cliffhangers in case the series return, but nothing that'd be a deal-braker if not used. Some of the individual stories are good, some are odd, others are completely disposable. I feel like this book is but a collection of backup stories, as this volume of the series really ended in Archer & Armstrong, Volume 6: American Wasteland. Nevertheless, it's cool if you really just need a few...
I liked the insider look at the One Percent and what really was going on with them. At first I felt they could have done way more with the group of old guys, and finally they throw this amazing story line at us!
In normal Valiant fashion, this final volume of Archer & Armstrong (for now) is a collection of all of the random stories from issue #25 as well as issue #23, the One Percent one-shot, and the Directors Cut of issue #0, and it's...okay, I guess. The issue devoted to Mary-Maria is probably the best part of the book, basically acting as Mary-Maria #0 and giving us her super-tragic backstory. I can see why they put this issue here rather than in volume 6, since it's essentially a side-story with lit...
3.5 StarsEnjoyable cap to Van Lente's run on A&A: Mary Maria's origin story provides some needed depth to her character, while the 25th issue is more of a celebration of the run as a whole. The 1% issue is a really interesting addition here -- cold, cynical, and kind of dead-on in a lot of its satire. I love these kinds of "satellite" issues and love that Valiant (1) allows them to see the light of day in the first place and (2) puts them in these collected editions.Van Lente's run (w/ all of the...
A tonally confusing stew with too many cooks throwing ingredients in it, this final volume of the first run of 21st century Archer & Armstrong boasts several writers I enjoy, and a wide variety of artists.Unfrotunately, it goes from sincere origin story to cooky time travel not to be taken seriously to whacky continuity-important serialization fast enough to induce whiplash. This is more of a story that takes place around Archer & Armstrong than an Archer & Armstrong story, and while I would usua...
The blurb says that it all ends here (albeit in the typical jokey A&A fashion) but, honestly, it seems as though (story-wise) it all ended in the last volume. The One Percent and Other Tales is basically...well, other tales. You know, whatever was leftover that didn't directly have to do with their ongoing adventure arc. I actually really loved the issue about Mary Maria and her father. To me, that was the best of the bunch. I'd already read #0 - just minus the director's cut stuff. That sort of
