Perdita is born to a German mother who fell madly in love with an Englishman, who unfortunately died in the First World War a year after Perdita's birth. A year later, her mother dies of grief and the two-year-old Perdita is sent to her aunt in Germany who becomes like a mother to her. Around Perdita's 12th birthday her aunt dies too and Perdita is sent back to England to her father's side of the family. Speaking hardly any English and having an odd name, she has problems fitting in with the other girls her age and is tormented by a longing for a home long gone.
