Nomamvula is the woman featuring in a biography; “She shall fear no evil.” Her sad journey starts when her mother leaves her marriage and abandons her and her siblings. She is brought up by parental substitute but that is where she was sexually abused at the age of 9 years until she was 12 together with her older sister. Nomamvula was a school dropout at the age if 13 years; almost a street kid at the age of 15 years. At 17 her mother comes into her life and she sends Nomamvula to Zambia to continue her secondary education when she was 20 years old. In this home in Zambia she was raped continuously for two years until she could not take it anymore. She runs away to join the liberation movement. She was turned back to face the same family she ran away from to go back and finish her secondary education. She broke down. She went back to the family and the rape continued. Finally she successfully runs away again and was looked after by a benevolent South African family. She get a Zapu scholarship to study in Germany; East Germany. She was admitted at a college where she did her A-Level equivalence course and German language; Karl-Marx University. She is sent to East Berlin to study Metallurgy at an engineering school; Ingeniuerschule fuer Automatisierung and Wrkstofftechnik; Hennigsdorf. Upon completion in 1984; she briefly went back to Zimbabwe but was not able to engage with her family normally anymore. She quarreled with them and was seriously beaten to near death by her brother. When she arrived back to Germany she crossed over to West Berlin and she registered at the Technical University of Berlin where she did her Masters degree. During her time at the University Nomamvula collapsed and was got diagnosed with depression. She was sent to clinic for Psychiatric clinic for depressed people. Her house doctor recommends an alternative form of treatment that saved her from a complete collapse due to medication. She tells her whole life story to a German psychotherapist who assists her to mend her life together. Only then was she able to cope with her life; her education; her son; a single parent. Nomamvula suffers depression for three decades alone without the knowledge of her family for fear of stigma related to it. She consciously makes Germany her home because it where she felt safe from all the trials and tribulations of her life emanating from the convoluted relationship with her family and siblings and certainly the background of rape and abandonment. Her senior brother had termed her a witch; a prostitute because she got a child out of wedlock; will be an alcoholic later in her life; he said to her. She tells herself that she survived depression; it’s not only that; that she survived; but rape and sexual abuse too. She will always be a survivor because she sees a brighter future for her and her son in Germany.
This documentary is an educational journey of a girl who consciously wanted education to remove her away from poverty that was imminent in her life. The moral lesson in the documentary will assist other women who have been raped and sexual abused at childhood to still fight all hardships and shine out of all adversaries.
