The fourth amendment to the US constitution prohibits unreasonable searches and seizes.

A personal search must be preceded by reasonable and probable cause to believe that illegal items will be found on the person searched.

A search warrant based on such probable cause is required because the citizen has a protected liberty interest in not having his bodily privacy unduly or
unreasonably invaded, but will be dispensed with in some circumstances, such as an immediate threat to public safety, high likelihood of destruction of evidence, and similar exigent circumstances.
