2.5 starsOk, here's the thing: I think it's great the DC has a book for teenage girls to read. But this version of Batgirl is not for me. She and her friend are too cutsie and silly to be alive, much less fight crime. Plus, despite all of her history as a formidable opponent, some of the things she does are just plain stupid. Hello? Did she just tackle a tiger? Come on, Babs! Don't you have a utility belt with some tranquilizers or something?! I don't care how hard you hit it, that tiger is going...
I wasn't totally convinced by the first trade of this new Batgirl, but the creative team has really hit their stride and, even though this isn't MY Babs and probably never will be, I really enjoyed this volume. The fact that they did a really sweet wedding issue, when I thought at first they'd just dropped Alysia entirely, really did a lot to win me over, and this run so much heart and is so cute it's hard not to like. (Although what was up with Dick in that issue? I love him normally but he was...
Terribly inconsistent art: there is no reason or excuse for random panels to break out into giant-eyed anime faces, and no one - male or female - has individual thighs or biceps thicker than their waist. The villains are nonsensical and uninteresting. And the supporting cast consists of a PC checklist rather than well-crafted characters.
(B) 74% | More than SatisfactoryNotes: Completely cotton candy, it's stakes and substance shy, bereft of bite and featherlight: all whipped cream top, no pie.
2.5 starsThe stories are still meh & very simple (2 stars), but Babs Tarr's artwork brings the quality up. There's less of it in this volume, though so not by very much.(view spoiler)[I get the feeling something happened in the Grayson comics between Barb & Dick, since in one issue Grayson is doing everything he can not to be seen by Batgirl (who thinks he is dead), but in a following issue he is climbing in the window to see her like it's nothing. (hide spoiler)]
Didn't particularly enjoy the first two issues in this volume but LOVED issues 43, 44, 45 and annual 3. Definitely glad I continued on with this series!
The best thing I can say about this book is "Meh". The best issues are the ones where the new Batman appears. At least then the book feels like it's part of the DCU and not a cutesy ONI press book. But them we skate back downhill into this ridiculous Velvet Tiger business. Velvet Tiger is just a stereotypical, hand-wringing, maniacal villain. All she needed is a mustache to twirl. No real motivations for being a villain. Just my company went out of business so I'm going to send tigers to eat all...
(Received from Netgalley for review.)At this point, I've more than given this new version of Batgirl a fair shot, and I feel fully justified in saying that I just don't like it at all. To me, this character simply doesn't feel like the Babs I know and love. She's an entirely different person trying to fill shoes she isn't ready for. I don't know, maybe I would like the character more if she were totally original, instead of an original character masquerading as a familiar one. And maybe I'd be m...
Good story and good art -- if a little fanservice-ee in plot, and a little impressionistic in drawing style. five solid stories across seven comics issues: "Interference/Sneak Peek" & "Surge Protection": Batgirl and the Jim Gordon Batman-Suit against LiveWire -- and each other! Babs' former roommate Alysia is setting married. "The Gladius Objective": Batgirl gets a flash team-up with Spyral agent "Director" - and secretly, with Dick Grayson. As Spyral steps out, the larger mystery remains and we...
meh, just meh. that’s all i have to say.
Ugh. I just can't. Dropped about halfway in. Not my cup of tea anymore, sadly.
Batgirl, Volume 2: Family Business is series of one-shots about the current Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, and her team of young sidekicks. The back of the book tries to make it seem like the whole thing is about the fact that Babs’s dad, Jim Gordon, is the new Batman, but it’s (disappointingly) hardly relevant. The stories in this volume are generally good – they’re short, and don’t really progress Babs’s story at all, but they’re cute and make sense. Frankie’s arc made the most progress – I want to k...
Move aside wet paint, there’s something else to tediously stare at for a while: the new Batgirl book! The current Batman is temporarily (and stupidly) Jim Gordon sans moustache who’s been chugging the handsome juice. He operates inside a robo-Bat suit and doesn’t know Batgirl is his daughter Babs – but she knows its him inside the Chappie-esque outfit. Hello cheap contrivance!Need more non-story? There’s cheap knockoff villains galore from Co-Op (a pale imitation of Marvel’s Arcade), Live Wire,
I just love Babs. Obviously I read this in single issues as the trade isn't out yet but it was wonderful and cute and funny and wonderful.I totally don't understand why people consider this Batgirl to be 'dumbed down'. Why can't she be ass-kicking badass and a savvy social media user all at once?
I thought the first volume was good, if uneven. (Again, I'm maybe unfairly comparing it with the earlier Gail Simone-penned series.) So I headed into Volume 2: Family Business with some optimism, but in the first story Commissioner Gordon reveals himself to be a Robocop version of Batman.Umm . . . no.Thankfully, things improved with the second story 'The Gladius Objective,' a multi-chapter adventure of contrasting art styles and Batgirl's amusing early interactions with Huntress, Spoiler, & Batw...
Get out of here with your wedding planning, ya love triangle having, dumb and flaky version of Batgirl.
Also available on the WondrousBooks blog. Although enjoyable, this volume definitely does not live up to the first one. (review of Batgirl, Vol.1 over here). The graphics are still very beautiful and great to look at (this is important especially in comparison with the graphics of volume 3, which I'm not so crazy about). And I also kept having lots and lots of fun with the characters, their attitude(at least that of most of them) and the entire setting and the look of the book. However, the big
I'm so conflicted with this run. I love the artwork, and I enjoyed the last issue with Dick (but I was even conflicted with parts of that issue). I don't like what they've done to Batgirl. She's gone from a super intelligent badass to a dumbed down version of Batgirl. I'll still read it because Babs has always been one of my favorite characters, but I continue to be disappointed.
**I received a free eARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**This was a bit more different than what I expected, but I really enjoyed reading about this new Batgirl! First of all, the art in this is just precious and had a very cute style to it, especially when we're seeing things from Barbara's perspective, a full combination of vibrant colors, as opposed to the darker ones we see when she's Batgirl. There are also a lot of different characters showing up. Like Bar...
I'm enjoying this happier version of Batgirl. I really like the bonding moments that Barbara Gordon has with her father and her support crew. The facial expressions are drawn well, so the emotion of these interactions comes through well. The only negative for me was the one issue included in this collection which had Batgirl meet other members of the Bat family. The gimmick was that when she met a member, that part of the book was drawn by the artist who normally draws that character. The sudden...
