We are informed by the records of that period that those august assemblies, when they met to deliberate on the affairs of the nation, undertook also the decision of such causes between subject and subject as they con ceived to be of too much importance, or too great ditfi culty, for the determination of the ordinary tribunals. When the abolition of trials bv ordeal and personal com bat afterward gave rise to such frequent appeals to the court as to interfere with the more immediate and im portant objects of its meeting, a certain number of its members appear to have been delegated for the partien lar purpose of discharging this inferior duty. This delegation, from the place in which it usually assembled, was denominated the Aula Regis.'
