On their way back to the Central Corridor of Inhabited Planets for repairs after their battle with the Arcogens, the crew of the Star Cruiser Maidencept stops off at Dinaven 7, the homeworld of Orni Palucka, the ship's psychic Counselor. Force and Amelia let their crew transport down to the surface for a day off while the ship takes on extra fuel, food, and water. The crew isn't prepared for a whole populations of psychics, though, and they experience extreme reactions bordering on insanity.

Meanwhile, Orni has gone AWOL, and none of the crew can go after her among an entire planet of people equipped to cover her tracks. Can Amelia find Orni before it's too late? Should she risk her own sanity and the lives of her crew to try?

Unbeknownst to Force and Amelia, the inhabitants of Dinaven 7 also use their abilities to hide a deep and abiding hatred for the Meck, the species to which their Tactical Officer Fick Rath belongs. Before Amelia can do anything to stop it, hostilities break out between the Dinavens and her crew in a struggle for Fick's life. Can anyone salvage this situation?
