It is 1939 in France and stories of war have began to spread through to the entire country. Vianne and Isabelle Rossignol are two sisters who couldn’t be more different, they have suffered the loss of their mother due to illness and their father due to alcoholism and despair. Vianne is a shy and safe housewife, who refuses to accept that war is coming and will have negative impact on her life. Isabelle is fiery, beautiful and young. She is overly excited to try and join the war effort in order to do her part and do something significant for her country. Finally when the War comes to France, the two sisters learn firsthand that they must change their ways if they stand any chance of surviving. Viane must learn how to stay strong for her daughter and the people that she loves. Isabelle has her perspective opened when she has first hand experience in war. She learns to look at the World in a different light, and that fighting this war is not as easy as she thought.
Through the years of war, hardships, and sacrifice the two sisters learn about who they really are and what potential they have inside them. They face extreme hardships of starvation, suffering, and pain. Through their unimaginable loss, they have come to see what really matters in their life.
