The North Star: A Tale of Norway in the Tenth Century

The North Star: A Tale of Norway in the Tenth Century

M.E. Henry-Ruffin
0/5 ( ratings)
Margaret Ellen Henry Ruffin, who wrote under the pseudonym "M.E. Henry-Ruffin" during an era when it wasn't considered seemly or commercially wise to advertise female authorship, was born August 26, 1857, in Mobile, Alabama, of Irish-immigrant parents. The North Star is a rollicking adventure that should appeal to male readers regardless of the author's gender.
The "North Star" of this book's title refers to Olaf Tryggevesson, first king of all Norway , which makes this novel historical fiction. Ms. Ruffin clearly did her homework on the subject of King Olaf. She has the known facts correct on Olaf's lineage, the murder and overthrow of his father, Olaf's subsequent exile until he was old enough to return, even the fact that the murderous usurper—Earl Haakon—sent an emissary to Ireland to lure him back to Norway under false pretenses... false pretenses which had remarkably become true by the time Olaf arrived! So instead of being murdered when he arrived, as was planned, he was acclaimed king by the populace. He must have acquired some Irish luck while he was living there.
The North Star is an enjoyable way to learn some Scandinavian history , especially regarding this particular era, an historical period which might otherwise be neglected by your self-educational efforts.
