George Brasell

George Brasell, born in Timaru, New Zealand in 1911, lived most of his life in Lyttelton where he quickly found an affinity with the sea and boats. He was a national yachting champion at 14, a boat building apprentice and then became a commercial fisherman.

During World War II, George Brasell served in the Merchant Service and the Royal New Zealand Navy. Later he and his launch played a vital role in the Manapouri project at Deep Cove in Fiordland. George Brasell proved himself as a designer and builder of fine boats, as a superb seaman and navigator, and a man of great courage and determination.-in 1951 he was decorated for bravery in a remarkable sea rescue.
