Fifteen-year old Rhoda, used to a life of luxury in Cyprus, rejoins her family in Palestine. There she is appalled at her mother's involvement with a group who worship the new Messiah in secret, but without fear. Rhoda is betrothed to the son of a high priest of the Temple and looks forward to escape from her mother's world of zealotry. But during the year of her betrothal, she falls in love with David, a young Christian, and when she witnesses the martyrdom of Stephen, she faces the fact that she, too, has become a believer.
