My Little Big Brother

My Little Big Brother

Kris Lee
0/5 ( ratings)
Trisomy 18 is a genetic complication which affects one in every 6,000 births, 80% of which are female. Few children live past a few years with this condition, and those who do will require constant care for the rest of their lives. People with Trisomy 18 have developmental delays, growth deficiencies, and suffer from mental retardation.

My older brother does not have Trisomy 18. He has a condition known as Trisomy 18p - a condition so rare there is next to no information available about it. There have only ever been twenty-one cases every documented in medical history, and out of those very few have lived long.

He is twenty-six years old this year.

This book is the story of my family, a story about a journey most have never heard of and perhaps never will. Raising a child is never easy - I know, I was a child once. This story is special though because it’s about a child who never grows older and doesn’t want to. A child who believes everyone tells the truth, will give money to people who ask, and cannot understand why it’s bad manners to speak up when you have an opinion that others around you don’t share.

I have the privilege of being the sibling of such a person, and together with my parents we share our story and what we’ve learned from being placed in such a unique situation. Hopefully, you can learn something too.
