Late in the 1880’s, young Joyce is an Irish immigrant living in a town filled with relatives. After losing her parents in a boat accident, Joyce and her brothers are cared for by their aunt Grace and the many caring relatives in their town. But Joyce longs for more. She wants to travel, to see the world, to get out of Virginia. Grace is aware of her niece’s anxiety and suggests she follow her dreams to the West by answering an ad for a bride. The man, Tom, is wealthy and young, sounding intelligent and kind in his letters.
Upon her arrival in Colorado, Joyce is told that she is now the new mother of a baby girl. Angry that she has been deceived, Joyce contemplates going home to her relatives. She has money saved and can get a ticket. Will she stay and take care of little Eliza? Will she be able to bond with Tom, a man who is so deep in the depression after losing his wife he is barely present at home? Joyce is determined to do what’s right. But how does she know what that is?
