Priscillian of Avila (Academic Monograph Reprints)

Priscillian of Avila (Academic Monograph Reprints)

Henry Chadwick
3.6/5 ( ratings)
Priscillian, Bishop of Avila 381-5, led an evangelical ascetic movement in the Spanish churches which encouraged charismatic prophecy among both men and women, with the study of heretical Apocrypha. His interest in the occult led to accusations of sorcery and Manicheism, and in 385 he was tortured and executed by imperial order. He was the first, and in antiquity almost the only, heretic in antiquity to be executed by the secular arm. In this study, Chadwick seeks not only to bring out the true nature of Priscillian's beliefs, but to examine the social and political pressures which produced the tragedy of his execution.
