We did not expect to find much game very near Pilgrim's Rest, and all agreed the best plan was to push on steadily down the valley, and not waste time in beating about. But before we had covered a couple of miles, Glynn's two pointers would keep sneaking off into the grass, and soon stood to birds. It seemed a sin to rate them off a point, so I and Glynn joined the dogs as quickly as we could, after getting down the guns from the tent of the wagon, and slipping in the cartridges. We each bagged a brace of birds when the covey rose. The younger of the two dogs indulged in a chase on his own account, but Don, an English bred dog, stood like a rock until " hold up" from his master, when he found another member of the covey trying to do stowaway, but that game was not feasible just there, the grass being damp; the scent was good, and Mr. Stowaway was obliged to put in an appearance, and fell to Glynn's gun. The dogs were accustomed to travel with the wagon, and did not range very wide of the road, so we were able to sit on the wagon box, watching them work, and only jumped down when the pointers looked interested.
