The late Billy Caldwell was half Mohawk and half Irish metis, son of Rising Sun and Captain William Caldwell of the British Army. Born March 17, 1780 outside of Fort Niagara , he traveled throughout the Great Lakes, was a pioneer of early Chicago and left for Iowa with the Indian Removal Act of 1833. A significant Chicago legend due to his negotiation of several treaties resulting in creating a dynasty of his family and tribe in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He died from cholera September 21, 1841 at the age of 61.
