I felt that some of the stories were absolute gems, like Haven of Shadows and no. 165 Independence Lane. Others were a bit too heavy on the viscera and a bit too light on development.
I was quite amazed on how each stories actually related to 'flesh', be it in relation to human, animal or fruit even metaphorically it was depicted well. Personal reviews on stories I love most: If You're Happy and You Know It Clap Your Hands (Teo Yi Han) : love the story telling, the narrator was good in representing the plot, make it fun though the story was actually a bit heart-wrenching. Melodramatic, yet beautifully written. I love this story the most. The Whole Hog (Terence Toh) : Sorchai
I did not finish a lot of stories in this collection because it was not good enough to devote that time to. And it was short, so keep that in mind. These read like they were high school student's work. Which can be kind of endearing at times, but I dunno, it just did not have the spunk and tightness that short stories usually have. So, sorry Khaw. Sorry SEA Urban anthologies. There was a lot of Malaysia and Philippines in here, a lot of body disposal, a lot of folklore, a lot of terms I didn't b...
Sorry, for me, overall, this book worths 2/5. I only like "If you're happy & you know it clap your hands", "the whole hog", "Dr Domingo" & "Thorax of a Bowfly". The above-mentioned stories have strong characters & good plot arcs (as what good stories MUST have). The rest are simply too difficult to read because of unwordly "speculative" elements, exposition overload, overly-flowery texts, info dumping, convoluted storylines & unnecessary descriptive terms. I have to strain my eyes in order to re...
An insight to urban lifestyle and mentality, some stories stronger than others, others a little more poetic and less comprehensible.
To my surprise, I actually like this book. Like, but not in love. Some of the stories are good, some are mediocre. I actually do not like one of the stories here and thought it was really cringey but I’d rather not name it. I do not have my favourite here but a few are memorable like Tempoyak and Cherry Clubbing. I’m not sure this will be in my reread list anytime soon though.
The book, aptly illustrated on the front cover, like durian, you either love it or hate it. The stories featured in Flesh were either hits or misses to me. I wanted to love the book badly because one; I was intrigued by the cover, two, the book featured Southeast Asian stories that revolved around “Flesh” which included taboo subjects in our culture.I loved that the word Flesh was given different interpretations covering a huge range on what the word could mean, from the literal skin, organs, bo...
I don’t like most of the short stories coz I couldn’t understand the plot, the storyline. I didn’t get the message of the stories and where it led. This book sucks. However, there are some stories that are worth the compliment.
Its certainly like the durian flesh. Some would love it and some hate it. Certainly not for teens reader as it's too dark. Love most of the stories in this book as they are very exciting . Only had a bit problem understanding some stories outside Msia, Singapore and Indonesia as am not well verse with their culture.
