Kinda boring, I guess I should’ve read the Poe comics?
The listing here doesn't say it yet, but this is written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker of The Thrilling Adventure Hour. It would be an understatement to say that I was a huge fan of TAH: I went every month for something like six years. I absolutely loved it and Acker and Blacker's sense of humor. And now...they're doing a Star Wars book?! omg!!!Buuuuut...I was a little disappointed by the result. This book is very funny in places -- especially, and unsurprisingly considering the authors' "old-tim...
I've never done acid, but this must be what an acid trip feels like.If this is what Acker & Blacker put out I can't imagine I'll like their short in the 40th anniversary anthology. I'm feeling like this is on par with the "Jedi Prince" series - utter crap.Mattis Banz is a 14/15 year old who has been recruited to join the Reistance along with Lorica (a Zeltron), Dec and his "brother" droid (the hell?), Sari, and the group's leader, Jo.There are enough new species (Saurin, Skup, Quaggian) and plan...
Fifteen year old, Mattis Banz, dreams of being a hero like Luke Skywalker, Admiral Ackbar, and General Leia Organa, and he just might get his chance when the Resistance recruits him. Excited to become a pilot and help save the galaxy from the nefarious First Order, Mattis is eager to start his training at the Resistance headquarters. However, once Mattis arrives, things don’t go exactly as he imagined they would...but new friends, new missions, and new adventures await him!Ben Acker and Ben Blac...
I've been reading as much of the new canon as I can, and I also have a 7-year-old, so I bought this when it came out. It was just "ok" for me. I liked the characters by the end, especially Sari, and will definitely read the next book (cliffhanger endings suck, by the way). I'm still baffled how they put this series out and then made no reference to it at all in the press releases about the Resistance TV show, which has the same setting and premise and target age group. Will have to watch it and
This was really cute! I picked it up because of my affection for Bens Acker & Blacker. It's a quick, fun middle-grade novel, great for tweens who loved Force Awakens. Annie Wu's illustrations are adorable. My main quibble is that the protagonist, Mattis, is pretty much the least interesting character? He's not uninteresting--I do appreciate his inner turmoil re: wanting be be heroic vs actually being heroic, and I think that struggle is something relatable for tweens... but just, give me more abo...
This one is a bit hard to review. I’m waffling somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. It takes a long time to come together and kind of find its groove but once it does, it becomes pretty fun. If you’re someone who is reading all of the new canon literature, it’s worth a read. If you are actually in the suggested age group for this one (as I am decidedly not – physically, at least), it is ok but I would suggest that there are other options far more interesting and fun (Servants of the Empire, definite...
This is the beginning of a new series set in a galaxy far, far away. In this one, the Resistance scouts and recruits young teenagers to the Resistance. Mattis is an orphan and has dreamed about being a hero. He is worthy of the Resistance. This book is meant for children. As you can tell by my rating I did not enjoy this book. I use a lot of leeway when I read a children's book from this universe. I do not rate them like I do for the adult novels as I attempt to suspend my disbelief. I just finis...
I've been super frustrated with the lack of original Star Wars juvenile books/series the past several years. Particularly since Disney took over, everything seemed to be novelizations. The Last of the Jedi was the last original series I could think of.FINALLY! Something new and original for the 8-12 age group! While it doesn't quite match Jude Watson's level of writing (somebody PLEASE bring her back for a canon series!), Join the Resistance is a whole lot of fun. I found myself attached to pret...
A fun cast of characters learn to work together and overcome personality conflicts. If you can get over the idea that the Resistance is actively recruiting and extracting 15 year olds (which I'm side-eyeing pretty hard, personally) this is a fun Star Wars story.Mattis is interesting to me because he's a do-gooder who knows he's a do-gooder and wants other people to notice when he does good and fete him for it. He's pretty pompous about it, in his own mind. I'm curious if this is a deliberate fla...
3.5 StarsThis was a good introduction to the Join the Resistance series. Centring on Mattis Banz, an apparently force-sensitive kid, joining the Resistance. It also follows a ragtag group of friends getting to know each other and learning to get along in their newly formed J-Squad. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good junior novel. However, there seemed to be a few plot holes. It seemed way too easy for the kids to survive a Sarlacc pit, and even though Mattis is supposed to be force-sensit...
Soooo, the resistance is recruiting 15 year olds. Let this one sink in for a moment... Besides that we get yet another pleasant read for the youngsters. Level-wise this is somewhere in the middle between "Adventures in Wild Space" (which is clearly for the younglings) and "Servants of the Empire (which seems more for Padawans). Reading this book I appreciated "Bloodlines" more, as it gave me some much needed political background, but besides one short statement, we do not learn more of this, as
STAR WARS!! Full disclosure, I don't read a ton of Star Wars books (I'm completely unfamiliar with the Extended Universe, for instance). The ones I do read are typically about Leia Organa. But I trust Ben Acker and Ben Blacker to built characters that I love, to come up with situations that are fun and interesting. The delivered here. Annie Wu's illustrations were really dynamic and a fun addition. I adored Mattis, he's such a cute and earnest character, and all the other characters were great!
Marketing and branding going too far. This isn't a Star Wars story, this is young teens in space adventure for children. The SW link is so thin you loose it. The story is slow and the characters full of clichés. Honestly there isn't nothing about it that would make me recommend it. Pass on, you must!
Well, this one was bad. Unlike other Star Wars young adult books, this had absolutely nothing to offer adults. I won't go scorched earth criticism here, but the writing, the plot, the characters, the ending... all really, really bad. Should've known from the cover. Quick summary for future reference, after I've forgotten this completely: (view spoiler)[ Mattis, a 15-year-old that acts like he's 7, wants to join the resistance because it sounds cool. He sticks up for himself against a bully on hi...
Meh.
I read this book in about two hours. It started out fun but then became a chore. Once I finished, I read an interview with one of the authors where he stated that this was their first prose endeavor and their first book. And, unfortunately, it shows. Somewhere in the interview, the author also stated that they had originally only outlined one book, and that their editor insisted they chop it into four. So, essentially, "Join the Resistance" is only the first act of a much larger story, which is
This was a pretty quick book. I thoroughly enjoyed Join the Resistance as a YA novel. Mattis and company are a good group of characters that young Star Wars fans can come to love. It was fun having past Star Wars characters like Admiral Ackbar make appearances. Can’t wait to see what the galaxy has in store these characters.
This impressed me more than I thought it would. The last two chapters, dearlord that was a ride. I'm gonna ignore a lot of the less thought out parts, like recruiting kids to a base and the mass amounts of different animals so close, because it's written in a very light way. I lovelovelove that the main character cries, like how cool is that that he cries when he's happy and sad. So sweet. I think for the most part the characters were really well done, I wasn't expect as much personality to them...
I know I shouldn't judge this book so harshly, being written with junior readers in mind (and I'm 38!), but I've reviewed other JR books anyway; some have been excellent, and others... well, like this one. This is a rather mediocre attempt to tell a totally irrelevant story. Although the characters are meant to be appealing to junior readers, it is only logical to conclude that they should be at least palatable to not so young people like me. Sadly, I didn't even remember the characters' last nam...
