This study examines the major defense issues and developments which Western Europe faces over the next ten years. The authors look in detail at the strategic and foreign policy interests of the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, and their influence on European security, and go on to examine the defense problems of Great Britain, West Germany, and France. They define ways in which threats to peace might arise in Europe and the type of military conflict which might occur. They reassess the value and the limitations of NATO, consider the issues of maritime and nuclear power, in particular the future role of British and French nuclear forces.
