Comrades of the Trail (Banner Books)

Comrades of the Trail (Banner Books)

Head throbbing, still a little dazed, 12-year-old Josh clung to the saddle horn. At last he slipped into near unconsciousness, rousing only when his horse, Ebony, stopped. "What's wrong, old boy?" The horse tossed his head and whinnied. Snow feathered his head and bridle, "Don't stop now, Ebony."

Although the boy prodded him again, the horse refused to budge. "What's wrong with you?" Ebony pranced a bit, but flatly refused to budge. "Great! How can we get to camp if you act that way? Well, if you won't go, you won't go. Maybe you know something I don't" Josh sighed. "Pa always says animals are smarter than people in storms. We'll stay here. I can't haul you, that's for sure." As he fumbled in his pocket, his disgust changed to alarm. "Oh, no, the matches are in my other shirt pocket!" He stared at Ebony. "How am I going to get a fire going? It's getting colder every minute."

It was. A rush of frigid air had come with the snow. Josh clutched his jacket together, then pulled his cap low over his ears. No fire. His horse wouldn't move. Freezing weather. He could die here just a few hundred yards from camp.
