Walking the Portuguese Camino: Porto to Santiago de Compostela

Walking the Portuguese Camino: Porto to Santiago de Compostela

John Rowan
3.6/5 ( ratings)
This self help guide provides the reader with all essential information necessary to plan and walk the Portuguese Camino, in the footsteps of pilgrims past.
Whatever your motivation for undertaking the walk, whether religious, spiritual, health or just pure curiosity it is important to prepare well and remain open to all that a Camino has to offer. Hopefully the experience will be uplifting and you will be left with treasured memories which will last a lifetime.
To give your journey historical context I’ve briefly outlined the Christian story that connects Saint James with Northern Spain and have provided a short historical perspective on the modern Santiago pilgrimage.
You will be guided from Porto’s Se Cathedral along the historical 240 km Portuguese ‘Interior’ Camino route, navigating roads, rural passes, visiting small medieval towns and villages and travelling through forests, over bridges and alongside farms until you reach your ultimate destination; the beautiful cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
This guide divides the route into suggested day walks that can be easily varied to suit your walking pace, time availability and levels of stamina.
Hand-drawn walking maps, route elevations, instructions for keeping you on track and information on sites of interest are all provided.
