0/5 ( ratings)
This book has a number of Philippine Postage stamps that were produced for the 1998 Centennial Celebration of Philippine independence. The Philippine Postal Service also celebrated its centennial in 1998. The Philippine takes special pride in being the first country in Southeast Asia to issue postages stamps and the first among the colonies of Spain at the time. This book, the first of its kind in philatelic history, presents historical events and important personalities in Philippine history through a selection of postage stamps. The selections ranges from issues dating back to the early 1800's Key figure in Philippine government , art, literature, music and science are presented in the chapter "Famous Filipinos." Highlights in history from the landing of Magellan in Cebu to the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo are described in the chapter "Historical Events" The life of the first Asian nationalist and Philippine National hero, Dr. Jose Rizal is told through a selection of over thirty stamps beginning in his birthplace and ending in Luneta Pakr, then known as Bagumbayan field, the scene of his execution. Also featured in this book are special issues by the National Centennial Commission and ten issues by the Philippine Postal Corporation celebrating the "Decade of Philippine Nationalism (19898-1998." The page format used features a blow-up of the stamp for the layman to appreciate and a print of the stamp's actual size for collectors to mount their stamps on. The sheer number and varieties of stamps issue in the last century would make a complete representation impossible, however this volume will prove to be a delight for the general public as well as stamp collectors all over the world.
