Daily Bread: April - June 2016

Daily Bread: April - June 2016

The theme of journeys runs through this quarter’s readings. Whether it’s the early church in Acts, starting out with a heady mix of miracles and mass conversions; or Abraham in our Genesis readings, struggling to remain true to his faith on his long journey from Ur to Haran; or the people of Israel, finally arrived in the promised land but discovering that there is still plenty of hard work ahead of them… it seems that what starts so promisingly can run into all sorts of difficulties later on. Discipleship is a long and bumpy road, as our readings in Mark show.
As Christians, some of us may have been on the journey of faith for a long time. We may feel jaded, as though we have ‘hit the wall’ in our Christian walk. Perhaps we’re more conscious of unanswered prayer around us than daily miracles. But if there’s one thing these readings encourage us to do, it’s to keep on walking by faith, and being ready, just like Caleb in our Joshua readings, to let God’s Spirit fuel us even into our mature years.
