Family of Earth and Oil is a story of twentieth century, Canadian immigration; of the ebb and flow of individuals, families and jobs between their countries of origin and the regions of Canada they settle in. They went from the old country to live in the new and sometimes back again, more than once. The families felt the shocks and tensions of immigration, as they internalized the influence and clash of old and new cultures in their new homes, environment, climate and economy.
Moira Hales grew up in an Anglo family in Western Canada. Her family experienced two World Wars and Post-War prosperity, while trying to make sense of their new lives.
Now sixty years old, Moira is wealthy, educated, urbane and widowed. She sits alone on Easter Sunday 1985 in an Anglican church in Calgary, amid a multi-cultural congregation. During the service she reminisces on the wandering, eventful and challenging life her family has led since WW1.
