Edward John Hopkins, celebrated as a player on the organ and a writer on the history and construction of the instrument, and also a composer of much church music of the best and purest kind, held the office of Organist of the Temple Church for fifty-four years, namely from 1843 to 1897, and during all that time maintained the music of the Church services at a high level of excellence. As a writer of services and hymns he could scarcely be surpassed in his day.
