MEET THE CHARACTERS
Media Jean: Smart and mischievous, Media Jean never accepts anything as a given. She's a charming anomaly: she can be as serious as a DOS prompt and as whimsical as a Mac startup icon. Meet Media Jean.
Chip MacMurray: Like a little Zen monk seeking high tech nirvana, Chip searches for ways to improve life's usability. His good-hearted upgrades and inventions often lead to unexpected results. Meet Chip.
Johnny Green: Johnny dreams of taking over Kid, Inc. so he can have the satisfaction of firing Media Jean and Chip. He also dreams of taking over the town, ruling the world, colonizing the moon, selling Mars... Meet Johnny.
Bob MacMurray: Single dad, downsized worker and reluctant blogger, Bob became Kid, Inc.'s first employee. As a hands-on, face-to-face kind of guy, he feels completely out of place in today's e-world. Meet Bob.
Alice Stillwater: As a down-to-earth romantic, Alice shuns technology, preferring the books, pencils and chalk of her youth — what she calls "the physicality of education." No wonder she's smitten with Bob, the town's Luddite. Meet Alice.
Henry Green: A modern CEO and corporate evangelist, Henry believes that only business can save the world. He is devoted to his son, Johnny, personally grooming the ambitious boy to take over the family empire. Meet Henry.
James Meriwether: Despite his pioneer heritage, James has settled into the role of bank president. Dissatisfied with a safe desk job, he dreams high adventure, on his way to a heck of a mid-life crisis. Meet Henry.
HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE ADVENTURES IN THIS VOLUME:
The Virtual Classroom: Media Jean and Chip try to attend 4th grade virtually.
Bedtime Stories: After being laid off, Bob rewrites Chip's bedtime stories with a very specific point of view.
Land Speeder: Inspired by Star Wars, the kids enlist Bob's help to build a REAL land speeder.
The Homework Conspiracy: The kids launch a campaign to ban homework.
So-Duh: Deciding to cash in on the surgery water craze, the kids invent their own brand of soda.
The Story of Fall: To get the kids off their digital devices, Bob tells them the story of Demeter.
Repositioning Halloween: Realizing that there's no real gift-giving holiday between Father's Day and Christmas, Johnny repositions Halloween to be that day.
The Real Thanksgiving: While everyone gets excited about the class play, Media Jean and Chip dig into the real facts of Thanksgiving.
The Santa Experience: Media Jean, Chip, and Johnny are each visited by Santa, with wildly different results.
PLUS: BOB'S BLOG
No one knows that Bob is a blogger. For several months, he himself didn’t know. His son, Chip, had upgraded Bob's manual typewriter to wirelessly post every keystroke online. When Bob learned the truth, and saw how happy his son was to have a high-tech dad, he decided to ride it out. But the Luddite in him refuses to go online, so he never sees his posts. Nor does anyone else—except Chip, Media Jean, and Johnny, who love to comment on Bob's entries.
