Following the mysterious death of his father and now his grandfather, twelve-year-old Michael Taylor inherits 3500 acres just across the main highway from a small town nestled in a river valley outside the great Smoky Mountains. He discovers a beautiful, magical, ancient chair hidden in his grandfather's storm cellar. Sitting in the Chair, Michael becomes smarter and over time people begin taking his advice. The Chair sends him and his two best friends, Anna and Justin, on a dangerous journey to find and replace the powerful stones missing from it's arms.

On the journey they encounter a secret cave, a mysterious skeleton, a ferocious gray wolf, a majestic stone tomb on Graveyard Hill and a hidden Cherokee Indian burial mound. On the unexplored back side of Michael's mountain, they encounter a gun-waving thief and kidnapper, strange animals and weird vegetation. The powerful magical Chair revels clues that send Michael, his Mother and his two best friends looking for the cause of his Dad's fatal car crash and also searching for Justin's missing Mother. With help from the Chair and a 105-year-old witch who lives on top of the mountain, the kids weave their way through danger and fun while reinforcing their friendship and loyalty to each other.
