High and Inside: The New York Knickerbockers Baseball Team and the Season of '56 (a novel)

High and Inside: The New York Knickerbockers Baseball Team and the Season of '56 (a novel)

Mark Mitchell
0/5 ( ratings)
After five straight Series wins, the Knicks haven’t won the Fall Classic in two years. General Manager Nate Headmost decides to make several off-season trades to beef up their pitching and defense, but to do so he has to trade away beloved catcher Gabby Hare and power-hitting first baseman Mo Palouk, in exchange for veteran left-handed pitcher Woodrow Hager and feisty second baseman Kiki Cox. When the ’56 season starts off poorly, the press begins to call for heads to roll. Who’ll get the axe – Headmost or cantankerous old Manager, Baggy Duverall, who likes to offer labyrinthian explanations for what’s wrong with the team?

Meanwhile, the team stars, switch-hitting centerfielder Jimmy Kittles and ace pitcher Turk Olding, are behaving badly, even though both are performing well, despite Kittles’ bum leg and Olding’s fondness for the bottle. Can they save the day? Can rookie left fielder Carl Peters get playing time? Will sophomore catcher Milt Hanson recover from a dead arm? Will the Knicks be able to jump over the Cleveland Cherokees and the Detroit Bengals to win the pennant?

Follow the Knicks as they battle themselves and the rest of the league to try to get back on top. Along the way you get a behind-the-scenes look at the on-field and off-the-field challenges the best team in New York has to face. You’ll also meet a host of colorful characters, including Sammie March, perhaps the best player in baseball; Luke Pavinsky, the Bengals’ muscleman first baseman; Sandy Carr, Bengals’ left-hander and the paragon of coolness under pressure; Herm Abrams, the Cherokees’ misunderstood all-star third baseman; Nubs Schlitz, who’s battling back from a life-threatening injury; Cleveland pitching aces Windy Mack and Jack Manos; and many more.

What happens as the final days of the season dwindle down, and the Knicks’ cause looks hopeless?
