This novel was published in 1945 and the story line takes place in the year of 1765. The style of writing transports the readers imagination of how the English language might have been spoken in the 1700's in New England.

The story is the journey of one man's dream to be on his own, away from his home town where he lived in the shadows of his childhood. He left home to discover and claim the offer for free land to anyone who dared settle at the base of the white mountains, 40 miles west of Portsmouth, NH.

Today the region is well established with much commercialism. What I really like about this book is that it ignited my imagination and recall of the soul's search to capture what the mountains hold in store for each one of us, both then and now. It's as if time stood still and I was reading about myself and my journey for the unimagined.

It is a story of hope, despair, joy, persistence and the ideal stubbornness of the New Englander to persevere in harshest and most unrelenting conditions imaginable.

Our pathway is the same today as it was for Whit's and his young bride in the 1700's. Struggle to claim your own, build your resting place, create a social life, and feed your family. Theirs was a test of physical endurance, is it really so different today? I think not. This book is worth hunting down in the archives.
