progressive ideas and ideals in urdu literature

progressive ideas and ideals in urdu literature

Omar Latif
0/5 ( ratings)
It is hoped that the translations, reprints and original articles in this book will provide English readers with an insight into the formation and objectives of the All-India Progressive Writers' Association founded in 1936, and after Partition, the PWA Pakistan, and the seminal role they played in the creation of a radically new form of writing and literary criticism based on secular and humanist values focusing on the lives and aspirations of the common people. It also delves into two main reasons why the PWA in Pakistan couldn't play a more effective role: divisions amongst progressives and State repression of the left including the formal banning of the Communist Party of Pakistan and organizations allied with it, such as the PWA, in 1954. A centerpiece of the book is writings by, and on, Syed Sibte Hassan, a renowned and remarkable intellectual and journalist and a leading Marxist theoretician and activist. Articles on a few other literary personalities, and on aspects of the contemporary progressive literary movement, are also included. While a collaborative effort between three Pakistani-Canadians, it has been Dr. Khalid Sohail who has provided much material for the book and carried the main burden of seeing it through from genesis to publication. Omar Latif has edited it.
