Our Sages teach that when one flees from honor, honor pursues him. It would be hard to find someone to whom this could be better applied than Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, popularly called "The Steipler."

Rabbi Kanievsky published his score of brilliant and scholarly books with the hope that perhaps an occasional student might find a random idea worthy of serious consideration. He derisively dismissed those who considered him a special repository of wisdom or blessing. He befriended the unfortunate, apologized for an unintended slight to a child, wheeled cinderblocks through the darkened streets for his succah, oiled a squeaky window, forced his ailing legs to trudge through darkened streets to find and accommodate a stranded guest.

He was the epitome of simplicity and longed to be considered just an ordinary Jew who wanted to be left alone to teach, study and pray.

He failed in his hope to be left alone.

From the greatest to the most ordinary Jews, everyone knew that he was one of the gems of our age. They flocked to him for elucidations and decisions on knotty questions of talmudic law, for resolution of personal problems, for medical advice, for blessings. They knew that, because his life as in tune with the dictates of the Torah, his word would echo the will of heaven.
