Animal Farm

Animal Farm

Adrian Mitchell
0/5 ( ratings)
"SOVIET PROTEST BARS ORWELL FROM FESTIVAL!"

This self-explanatory lead from the front page of the New York Times concerning Britain's National Theatre production was followed by performances separate from the festival which were reviewed by the Times critic:

"The play never lets us forget the book. The creatures of Orwell's imagination appear and, with the help of Richard Peaslee's music and Adrian Mitchell's lyrics, they play out Orwell's fable of revolution betrayed. The music -- particularly the folk/rock numbers -- grows stronger, the sufferings of the animals grow more poignant. The high-minded commandments laid down by the Old Major are all subverted and then obliterated from history. We know, of course, the one altered commandment that will remain -- and when it shows up chalked on the side of a barn door, our expectations make it all the more chilling: 'All Animals Are Treated Equal But Some Are More Equal Than Others.' ... A tribute to the enduring power of a noble work."
