Fénix Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy , compiled with an introduction by Álvaro de Sousa Holstein & Marcelina Gama Leandro, and a foreword by Sarah A. Hoyt, comes from Portugal, with a large number of contributors of short short stories, many near the beginning of their writing careers, an exciting initiative. For this anthology, the challenge was not to write about some hypothetical future, extraordinary heroes, or mythical creatures—even if, as Portuguese authors, their storytelling tradition is so rich and well-documented that they could easily draw one story after another from that deep well of collective imaginarium.
Here, each author was asked to write about books and was given free latitude to take their stories wherever they wanted. The result: quite a unique collection of short stories, written by booklovers for booklovers, where books take center stage—and each one does so in its own way.
