I didn't like this book but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good book. Unusual and thought provoking, but bleak. And the ending was disappointing.
Thís is such an elegantly written piece of nihilism that I feel obliged to make it obey its own logic and throw it in the bin. This is a first for me. I usually take my unwanted books to the charity shop, but in my judgement this book does not need to continue to exist, so in the bin it goes!(The reason for two stars is that Michael Bracewell writes with the style of someone who is an accomplished author - but the end to which he has put his talent here is lamentable.)
The story of John White who, after losing his wife, takes to drugs to cure his depression. He is on a downward spiral until he meets Rachel, and his outlook is transformed. But Rachel is not as she seems and John's life begins, once again, to tumble out of control.
