C E 5 m�moires ont �t� compos�s en 1753 peu de tems apr�s la mort de milord Bolingbroke: ce fut milord Hyde, son disciple et son ami qui me proposa de les �crire. Le voyais souvent et j'honorais milord Hyde; j'acceptai sa proposition, mais j'exigeai qu'il me donn�t les instruc tions dont je croyais avoir besoin; je les ai re�ues, et cet ouvrage venait d'�tre termin� j'allais jouir des critiques de milord Hyde lorsqu'une ch�te de cheval lui �ta d'abord la raison et bient�t la vie.
