In this perfect isolated rural society nothing changes. Each small family community works together to provide food and shelter throughout the year according to rules laid down and preserved in a conserved tapestry hanging. The role of each of its members is laid down, and it is the elder women who are the decision makers.
Every midsummer the five families meet at a central dome where they trade in essential goods. Each member of the family is placed in a cell, where, in a state of unconsciousness changes are made to them. Some do not survive this process.
This way of living has gone on for generations.
Then a disruption occurs. The survival of one of the families is threatened and one girl steps forward to save it.
Jan breaks the rules. She crosses the line dividing men from women and takes on a man's task. Against the lore of the ruling elders, she begins to make her own decisions and to keep memories of things and people of the past.
When she discovers that she will be a bearer of the next child to enter the family she has to make a choice.
Will she chose to carry out this role and become one of the ruling elite of women?
The choice she makes marks the beginning of change for this society, the beginning of a new generation.
