Gospel Boldness: Mission, Evangelism and Prayer

Gospel Boldness: Mission, Evangelism and Prayer

This book presents a first attempt at a theology of gospel boldness. Boldness is not mere courage. Courage, whether physical or moral, is a common grace which God gives to all men to overcome fear and do something unpleasant but necessary for self-preservation or the common good. Gospel boldness may resemble courage to an outsider but is a fruit of the Holy Spirit shown only by Christians. It is closely related to our joy in the assurance of salvation and joy will always be present with gospel boldness. The Holy Spirit gives gospel boldness to his church to present Christ to the world clearly, fully, winsomely, and passionately. It is not the same as natural boldness: some people will be loud and brash in everything they do, whether it is telling the gospel or ordering MacDonalds, because it is a habit that they find that works for them, perhaps by cowering the opposition or hiding their own insecurity. However gospel boldness is not a habitual loudness, but behaves appropriately for each occasion. It is not self-centred but servant-hearted, which loves its hearers. Gospel boldness counts it, not an irksome duty but an immense privilege to present Christ. It is not satisfied with merely presenting the gospel for its own sake but is intensely interested in the results. Gospel boldness is convinced of Christ's sufficiency, saving power, glory, love and necessity and recommends Him urgently to unbelievers as their only yet sure hope. Gospel boldness is not interested in self-preservation and reputation but the conversion of the lost to the glory of God. Timidity is a serious problem in mission and evangelism today. On occasions when I have argued for bold evangelism people have commonly assumed that I am arguing for loudness, insensitivity and rudeness, or pressuring people through a evangelistic tool like the 'Four Spiritual Laws' or else they have countered that we must be wise. And so timidity is not only a huge sickness which infects us, but we are suspicious of the cure. This ignorance of the scriptural teaching on boldness means that we do not pray for it like we should. I can hardly remember ever hearing a prayer for boldness in any prayer meeting in any country I have been to. I hope your experience has been different but I doubt it. In any case prayer for boldness should be far more intense and frequent. This book is not primarily an exhortation to be bold, rather it is an appeal to see this teaching in the Bible and to pray intelligently, earnestly and always that God would grant us to speak the gospel with boldness .
