It has been said that this is truly a poetic age, and that no previous period of the world's history has produced so large a company of really gifted Singers. While such may be the case, I fear that my efforts will not add much to the literature of the age, or com mend themselves to the critical, however much this might be desired.

Far be it from me to desire empty ﬂattery; yet I feel that he who does not wish to stand deservedly high in the estimation of his fellow-men wants one of the greatest incentives to real worth.
