Excerpt from Why Am I A Jew?, Vol. 1: Discourse Delivered Before Sinai Congregation, Chicago, 1895

This hereditary stiffness of neck - this ancestral un yieldingness of heart, this blindness to the light, is also today, as it was yesterday, the characteristic bias of the Jewish mind. Stubbornness has preserved the Jew and blindness has given him vitality, but the Protestant church prays for the Jew that the day might come when the blind eves be opened and the ice-rinded hearts be melted.
