Dr. Sabrina Craig is a grieving widow looking for closure. In April of 1993, her late husband's final request is revealed to her in a letter written shortly before his death. World-renowned British archaeologist Mason Craig asks his much younger wife to spread his ashes over the wondrous Lakes of Band-i-Amir, high up in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan, on the one-year anniversary of his death. Unfortunately, the man most qualified to help Sabrina accomplish this task is Mason's estranged stepson, photo-journalist Jeremy Brentwood, who once accused Sabrina of being a gold digger. Nevertheless, Sabrina swallows her pride and persuades Jeremy to accompany her on the mission as a guide and interpreter. The journey quickly becomes perilous, and Sabrina, feeling guilty, must fight her growing attraction to Jeremy for more reasons than one.
