Stop Trying To Be A Christian: Learning To Let Jesus Express His Life Through You

Stop Trying To Be A Christian: Learning To Let Jesus Express His Life Through You

Spiritual maturity is often measured by Bible knowledge, prayer, giving, church attendance, service, ministry and personal evangelistic practices. But a closer look at Jesus’ methods with His disciples shows He focused on something different. He did not center His approach around spiritual disciplines, but relationships. The health and strength of our relationship with God is most accurately measured by our interpersonal relationships. Do we behave in Christlike ways in our relationships, regardless of how others act? Are we fully present to those around us? Are we quick to forgive? Generous? Kind? How we navigate around friends and family is a crucial indicator of our spiritual maturity, and says far more about us than how well we observe our spiritual disciplines. We may, for example, be able to memorize vast amounts of Scripture, but that has little bearing on how we get along with our kids. Our family life is a far more accurate reading of our spiritual temperature than having a bunch of Bible knowledge. It’s all about relationships. But it's not just learning how to be a faithful friend, or mate or spouse. Jesus teaches us that we cannot live a life that is pleasing to God. The key to spiritual maturity is learning how to allow Jesus to express Himself through our lives. He wants us to experience His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control in our relationships. That is the road to Christian maturity. This book explores how to let Jesus live His life through us in the context of a discipling relationship.
