GEORGE FLEMING: 'faithful servant'

GEORGE FLEMING: 'faithful servant'

Mike Farrell
0/5 ( ratings)
Probably the best known figure in British history is Queen Victoria, mainly due to the many TV shows and movies that have been made in recent years about her long reign, or to the hundreds of books and magazine articles published since she first ascended the throne in June 1837. However, ask anyone to name the man who featured the most in her life and answers will not be as easily forthcoming. They might include Prince Albert, her husband, or Lord Melbourne, her prime minister, or the Prince of Wales, her son, but a majority, especially older people, are likely to respond with "John Brown", the 'ghillie' from Balmoral, with whom she was supposed to have had a scandalous affair following her husband's death! Ironically, absolutely no one will mention the name 'George Fleming', yet he was very close to her in a personal capacity for 55 years, from childhood to retirement. By comparison, Albert knew her for only 20 years, whilst Brown was close for only 10, if the stories are to be believed. This book is based on a record of events that George maintained for most of those years, including his many excursions around the UK and into Europe with the Queen; his duties at the 'Palace', at the Castle, at Balmoral and Osborne, especially when looking after the Queen's children at his home in Windsor's Home Park; together with details of his private life and the lives of people around him. 'George Fleming, faithful servant', is a sequel to 'Royal Windsor Families of the 19th Century' published in Kindle and 'In Service of the Crown' published in paperback.
