What I am finding hard about following this series in trades is that so much time elapses between release of volumes, that I don't always remember exactly what is going on. Since the cast of this series is so big and sprawling, this is a bit of a problem. That said, Zatanna/Constantine's family is still great, and I am here for it if we're getting Lois Lane/Kara? I hope we're getting that.I guess I will find out in another six months!
(originally reviewed at thelibraryladies.com )I didn’t realize it when I reviewed our previous “DC Bombshells” Collection that “War Stories” was the last in the first large series within this alternate historical universe starring the awesome ladies of DC. I also didn’t realize that the second series, “DC Bombshells: United” was cancelled about a year into it’s run. Trust me, if I had known these things when we last visited this series, I would have gone on a long rant. In fact I’m pretty sur...
Unfortunately I think is the point where I'm going to have to drop this series. I really love the idea of it and it started fairly strong, but with each volume I like it less and become more impatient and confused. It's a fun girl power series, but it never focuses on the characters I'm actually interested in and it's easy to forget what is going on with some of them when we don't see them for 5 or 6 issues. The Good-amazing art-cool character designs-lots of awesome ladies-lots of awesome BI/LE...
Eehh, I like that this series has tried to widen its scope (geographically), but as a result, it feels disjointed and unwieldy. I have the first volume of Bombshells: United checked out, so I'll give it a shot, but if it doesn't hold up I'm going to have to let go of this series. :( Very sad, because I love the concept and I love how lady-centric it is, but I'm not enjoying it very much anymore.
A strong end to a strong series, though I do feel Wonder Woman and Mera and Batwoman and many others could have had more story. Overall, it was wrapped up well.
Enjoyable as always. Can’t wait to start Bombshells United now :)
I need a movie on this series asap. Someone make this HAPPEN.
I love this series, LOVE IT. It's so queer, full of amazing superheroines and anti-heroines. There are discussions about humanity, hope, and goodness and calls out of white supremacy, antisemitism, racism, misogyny, and xenophobia. The world is pretty queer friendly. Perfect? No, but although it is so full of hate and bigotry (from the villains), the hope and love and friendship is so heartwarming. I always ended up smiling with these characters. Bombshells is seriously everything I need; women
I think this one was a bit better than some of the previous volumes. The songs were terrible as always, and there’s always new characters appearing to add on to the confusion. It tries badly to be funny, and even though I enjoyed it, I believe it failed. I didn’t understand the magic storyline at the end but that didn’t kill the experience. I love the chemistry between Supergirl and Lois, their relationship is not explicitly romantic but it is full of wholesome moments. Also, the mustache Superm...
I like the concept, but it might be getting a bit tired.Final issue is clearly a march to finish the series as it includes multiple artists including a cartoony style that doesn't fit the issues beforehand...or the other artists in the same issue.
I have made no secret of the fact that when reading comics that feature female heroes, I often feel most satisfied in the telling when the superheroines stand on their own merits. Recent reading suggests that this is probably best executed in G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel and also in the J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman Batwoman (until Williams and Blackman abruptly left the book over differences with DC editorial.) Six volumes through Marguerite Bennett's DC Comics: Bombshells an...
The final volume in the Bombshells series, volume 6 War Stories brings the series to a satisfactory conclusion, although there will be a sequel series called, Bombshells United. This volume largely takes place during the Seige of Leningrad, though their are different areas of the battle. There are also a few flashbacks that largely work. However, the first story in Volume 6 is largely unconnected. The Suicide Squad (Barbara Gordoun, Ravager, Enchantress, Killer Croc, and Lt. Frankie Charles) snea...
The Bombshells series draws to a conclusion with a final battle against Hugo Strange and Killer Frost, as well as the mastermind behind the villains the Bombshells have faced. Supergirl and Raven both must face their pasts if they want to win. This final volume was a nice ending to the series, but not an entirely satisfying one. Quite a few main characters were missing entirely from this volume, including Wonder Woman, Batwoman, and Mera. Luckily, there is a sequel series to continue their storie...
This was a series I desperately wanted to love, and overall I enjoyed it, but there were times when the writing and the art just weren't up to the task. I was on board for a reimagining of the DCU, where the men who would be heroes were off at war, and that left the women at home to pick up the slack in the realm of crime-fighting.Unfortunately, the final product felt a bit unfulfilled. None of the heroines really get enough time in the spotlight to be distinguished as anything but a 1940s versi...
The final issue/chapter in this volume really felt out of sync with the rest of the book and threw me. Normally I don't have a problem with the artwork being different, but that section just felt really clunky art-wise compared to everything else. (Yes, I understand different artists have different styles.) But when you're putting things together as a full volume, as this is, wouldn't you aim for a little more similarity? idk.
This is... kind of all over the place? This collectes #25 and #30-33? Which is just odd. I double checked and that's what's listed on DC's website. Anyway, I enjoyed the first 2 volumes of this series (lack of women of color aside) but it just dipped for me and I'm not sure why? It went from managing multiple threads really well to getting bogged down with way too many. There's Batwoman's investigations, there's what's going on with Raven and Zatanna, there's what's going on with Mera and the wa...
I keep reading the Bombshells series, hoping I'll like it more. It's not bad...it's just not great either. The storyline is constantly jumping and expanding to the point that it's hard to keep up, and characters are introduced and thrown in all over the place. It's fun for a little while but gets exhausting. I honestly keep reading for Harley's parts.
World War II comes to an (early) conclusion in this final volume of Bombshells as Killer Frost, Hugo Strange, and a surprise appearance by another villain all play their last cards in the war to end all wars. But first, we get a missing issue from earlier in the run as the Suicide Squad infiltrate a submarine to rescue a familiar face. This incarnation of the Squad are an eclectic bunch, and it's always nice to see them. Then we get back to the main story. After the big conclusion a few volumes ag...
I completely LOVE this graphic novel series. I love all of the characters of this series and I loved how these characters developed and the girl power was amazing. I loved the art style of the comics. I loved how this series ended. Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy were some of the my favorites.
And so DC Bombshells (or should I say the first act of the Bombshells universe ends with a resounding meh). The short version of the review. If the idea of a comic featuring a large cast of female characters, most of whom date each other, in skimpy outfits but still drawn fairly respectfully sounds cool to you, do pick up this book. If you want your comics to do something special with story telling, skip this one. Also, you should probably be into American comic books (especially DC) at least som...
