Autumn 2017 Journal of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives

Autumn 2017 Journal of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives

Leandra Robertshaw
0/5 ( ratings)
This issue of our Journal is devoted to articles on aspects of the Segaki ceremony, related teaching and training. It is timed to be available as we approach the Autumn Segaki ceremonies and retreats held at temples of our Order in October.

'Segaki' is usually translated as 'Feeding the hungry ghosts' and also is traditionally a means for remembering and offering for those who have died, especially in traumatic circumstances. Its form comes from very old traditions of other cultures, but still resonates with many today.

This journal opens up this unique ceremony and related areas of training from a variety of angles. Articles explore aspects of the ceremony, including photos, then moves on to address what 'hungry ghosts' means in terms of training, and opening the heart in the face of death and loss. It has eight articles from monks and lay trainees, with the usual news and photos from Order temples in the UK, USA, Canada and Europe.

The quarterly journal provides those studying or interested in Zen in our lineage with teaching, encouragement and news from around our groups and temples of our Order. It also provides a sense of the wider community or trainees as it contains contributions from both monks and householders, women and men, young and old, from anywhere across the US, UK, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands.
It has been available as a paper journal available by subscription for over 40 years and began to be formatted as a digital publication in Spring 2014.
