Clearing Reno I

Clearing Reno I

Stephen Bloom
5/5 ( ratings)
Months after the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where General George Custer and about 264 men of 7th Cavalry died, Major Marcus Reno, Custer’s second-in-command, was branded a coward in the press and by some fellow officers. In 1879 Reno opted for a court of inquiry into his behaviour at the battle which led to the demise of Custer’s command. At the end of 26 days of testimony the army board had to decide whether to clear him or not of cowardice; yet rumours continued to follow. A surprising clique of officers who fought at the battle, were still prepared to criticize their former boss, as was Custer’s widow Elizabeth. In ‘Clearing Reno Volume I’ the author gives a modern summary of the battle, based upon the latest evidence from recent archaeological surveys, photographs and maps.
