Voices from Finland: An anthology of Finlands verse and prose in English, Finnish and Swedish.
This book has been compiled with the object not only of introducing Anglo-Saxon readers to the literature of Finland, but also of bringing back to the memory of Finns living abroad the words and thoughts of the poets whose works they read, and perhaps even recited or sang, in their native land when they were children; and for giving their children the opportunity of meeting these same poets, perhaps for the first time. Many people of Finnish origin no longer speak the language of their ancestors, or have but an imperfect command of it. This is one reason why the poems are printed in the original as well as in translation. In addition to the older poems, the anthology contains a selection of modern poetry and prose, including a number of quite recent works which are probably as little known to the Finn abroad as to the Anglo-Saxon world. - Elli Tompuri
