Forging the Swords is the 5th story in Lu Xun’s collection Old Tales Retold <故事新编>. The story is an innovative and new telling of a traditional Chinese tale. In this story, a sword making couple's quest to produce swords for the king turns awry. Their son is left to avenge the father's killing, only to encounter strange twists and turns along the way. The final scenes of this story are both laughable and haunting, leaving the reader to analyze one of the strangest and fanciful Chinese stories ever told.
