A few of these stories really got me excited but others left me a little flat. Overall not bad and I think everyone will find something to their taste. Give it a go!
What if you see some who looks like you? or you think you are living with the wrong family? These questions and more are answered by 10 authors in this anthology.I Know What They Look Like by Gary McMahon: A taxi driver picks up a fare and gets more than he bargains for. A great opening to the book and really sets the scene. Strange things tend to happen at night, evil lurks in the shadows. Whilst reading this I was imagining it set as a black and white movie, and felt the apprehension when he p...
I thorougly enjoyed this collection of dark stories about various sorts of imposters and doubles. I read it on a long day of travelling. I find I can't concentrate on a novel when I know I'm soon going to have to find my gate, land, take off, etc. Most of the stories were a solid 3 star, just fine but nothing I'd want to re-read."Hold My Hand and I'll Take Your There@ by Ralph Robert Moore is a 5 star story for me. I thought when I started it I wouldn't care for it as it seemed too miserable, an...
There are some interesting stories in this anthology of doppelgangers, imposters and suchlike. As with any anthology, not all the stories resonated and I certainly felt some were less accomplished than others, but so as not to dwell on negativity (my doppelganger is writing 'that' review in a parallel world containing BadReads right now), here are my favourites:"Other People's Dreams" by Stephen Bacon - a fluid, intricate story of identity and shifting reality."Little Heart" by Georgina Bruce -
The recent Imposter Syndrome anthology (2017), edited by James Everington and Dan Howarth from Dark Minds Press, is centered around the subject of doubles in one fashion or another. This can be anything from an actual duplicate such as a twin or an evil doppelgänger, or perhaps an identity thief passing themselves off as someone else’s online presence. I’ve found the idea fascinating ever since reading the story of a man being replaced by his spectral double in a book of “true” ghost stories man...
This is a complex, compelling story, and I dare not even attempt to interpret its past as fiction, nor re-tell it, as the story itself does call out the past as a fiction that can be misinterpreted, whether it be rape (explicitly mentioned) or something far more intangible… Dare not implicate myself in the evident strong and personal memories of the protagonist. It is powerful enough a reading experience without my breaking its eggshells to reveal more, something I fear I already have done witho...
Imposter Syndrome is a phenomenon I am very familiar with. As a creative type, there are few days that I don't live in fear of being exposed as a joke and a fraud. For this alone, I was drawn to the newest collection from Dark Minds Press. And while the stories in this book deal with Imposter syndrome in a more physical sense, there was a lot to be drawn to here. I think the notion of doppelgängers is extremely unsettling and the stories in this totally tap into that fear. And I loved how varied...
